Lena Blackhurst, DVM - team member since 2025
I am from Kalispell, MT, and graduated from Flathead High School. I pursued my undergraduate studies in Wildlife Biology at Montana State University before attending veterinary school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. I received my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2018 and have practiced small-animal medicine in both Kalispell and Missoula since graduating. My veterinary interests include dentistry, urgent care, internal medicine, ultrasound, and pain management. I value a low-stress, gentle approach with my patients.
I began practicing at Whitefish Animal Hospital in September 2025. Outside of work, I enjoy skiing, mountain biking, running, hiking, and spending time at Placid Lake. I live here in the Flathead with my husband, Riley, our 9‑month‑old son, our cat, and our two golden retriever mixes.
Kelly Powell, DVM - team member since 2022
Originally from northern Minnesota, I received my B.A. in Biology from Cornell University and then attended The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine (Go Buckeyes!). Following graduation, I worked in emergency medicine for two years before settling next to Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, where I practiced general small-animal medicine and raised my three children. All of them—despite growing up helping their mom in countless clinical scenarios—sadly eschewed the veterinary profession and chose human medicine instead. One has a doctorate in anesthesia, one is in surgical nursing, and one is starting an OBGYN residency. Sigh. Where did I go wrong?
Although I loved my years canoeing in the Boundary Waters, fishing for walleye, and cross-country skiing among the popples and pines, the mountains kept calling—and eventually, my heart followed. I am so happy to call Whitefish Animal Hospital my family and to be part of this incredible, professional, highly skilled team. I have truly enjoyed practicing veterinary medicine at the highest level here in the Flathead Valley for the past five years. I believe deeply in the human-animal bond and am passionate about partnering with families to provide the very best care for their beloved pets.
When I’m not in the hospital working hard to ensure your pet receives exceptional care, I can be found (or not) on a remote trail pursuing my greatest passion: hiking. I am an avid hiker and logged well over 1,000 miles on the trails in 2025. Backpacking in Glacier is my first love, though I’ve hiked around the world—including Patagonia, Chile; Everest Base Camp, Nepal (the photo is of me at Kala Patthar at 18,300 ft, with Mt. Everest over my left shoulder); and many extended treks through the French, Italian, and Swiss Alps. I also love skiing, snowshoeing, reading, cooking, and spending time with family—but to be honest, I’m always counting down the moments until I can lace up my boots and hit the trails again.
Shea Stevens, DVM - team member since 2018
I was born and raised in Kalispell and grew up loving all the Flathead Valley has to offer. I earned both a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and a Leadership Fellows Certificate from Montana State University before completing veterinary school at Oregon State University. After working at Whitefish Animal Hospital as a technician throughout veterinary school, on visits home, the decision to start my career here as a veterinarian was easy! I have the privilege of doing life with my husband, Casey, our son, Miles, our old pittie mix, Bailey, and our animated kitty, Putt Putt. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, adventuring outdoors, golfing (only) in beautiful weather, cheering on the MSU Bobcats, and experiencing live jazz and theater.
I look forward to sharing my passion for leadership and service with my hospital team and community. My special interests in preventive care, surgery, endoscopy, and palliative and end-of-life care help me to foster the human-animal bond and promote pets’ overall wellness and longevity, allowing owners as many happy years with their pets as possible. I’m a firm believer that veterinarians and clients work as a team in pet care, and I am honored to play a small part in my clients’ and patients’ stories.
Jim Thompson, DVM - owner since 1992
I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Arizona before earning my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1986. After graduation, I returned to my hometown of Phoenix, where I practiced veterinary medicine for six years.
Seeking a slower pace and a wonderful place to raise a family, I moved to Whitefish, Montana and purchased Whitefish Animal Hospital in 1992. As the practice owner, I have enjoyed building a dedicated team and providing progressive, compassionate care to the pets and families of our community.
Leslie Fethke, DVM - team member since 2018
I received my bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Denver and then graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. After veterinary school, I went into equine medicine and surgery. I completed two equine internships followed by a three-year large animal surgery residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
In 2013, I became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons for large animals (DACVS-LA). I practiced as an equine surgeon in Las Vegas for two years before transitioning to small animal medicine and surgery. I worked at an AAHA-accredited small animal hospital in Las Vegas for four years.
My husband and I met in my home state of Colorado, and we share a love for the mountains. We moved our son and chocolate lab to the Flathead Valley to be part of a mountain community where we can enjoy the outdoors and raise our family.
Stephanie Krick, DVM - team member since 2025
I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania and earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Messiah University before completing my veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. After practicing for several years in Pennsylvania, my husband (also a veterinarian) and I relocated to San Antonio, Texas, where I worked at a busy small-animal clinic for fourteen years. During that time, in addition to my clinical duties, I served as Medical Director for six years until my family relocated to Montana in 2025.
My priority as a veterinarian is to provide compassionate, high-quality care while partnering with families in their role as caretakers. I especially enjoy soft tissue surgery, preventive medicine, and dentistry, and I place great value on creating low-stress, comfortable visits for my patients.
Outside of work, I love exploring the outdoors with my husband and our 12-year-old daughter, cooking, staying active through running, cycling, and weight training, and trying new wines or making craft cocktails at home. Our family also includes four rescue cats (Elsa, Dewey, Webster, and Hopkins) and two dogs—Nash, a Brittany spaniel, and Sophia, a Bernedoodle. We try to include our four-legged family members in as many adventures as possible and feel grateful to have such beautiful natural spaces so close at hand.

I joined Whitefish Animal Hospital in June 2009. After spending eight years traveling as event coordinators, my husband Paul and I decided to settle down and have a family. A year or so after the birth of our daughter Eleanor, I knew it was time to go back to work. I was fortunate to join a great team at Whitefish Animal Hospital and indulge my lifelong love for animals.
I am a Canadian who has spent half my life learning and growing here in Whitefish. I love to play outdoors, make music, and spend quality time with my friends and family.

I now live in Whitefish with my husband, Clay, our son, Brody, and our two dogs, Eddie and Stanley. I work part-time as a technician at WAH, which allows me more time with my family. A native of Whitefish, I joined Whitefish Animal Hospital in 1997 and became a Licensed Veterinary Technician in 2005. I especially enjoy assisting with orthopedic surgeries and tackling challenging blood draws and IV catheters. In my free time, I love spending time outdoors with my daughters, Hanna and Hazel, going on walks with friends, and enjoying movie nights at home with my furry companions.
Jen - team member since 2006
After graduating from college in 1994, I moved to Whitefish to be a ski bum before returning to grad school. Who knew Whitefish would have such allure, and I would still be here years later!
My passion is the great outdoors — on any given day, you can find me skiing, hiking, or biking with my faithful dog and my husband, Jon.
Brooks - team member since 2012
I am a Montana native and am happy to call Whitefish my home. I graduated from the University of Montana in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. I went to Portland, Oregon a few years later after deciding that I wanted to work with animals. There, I earned my Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology in 2012 and passed the National Veterinary Technician Exam to become a Certified Veterinary Technician.
I have been working at Whitefish Animal Hospital since June 2012 and loving every day.
Stephanie - team member since 2012
I met my husband in Alaska back in 1999. We moved to Whitefish in 2012 after living for eight years in New Orleans, LA. After a year in Seattle, we realized that the Flathead Valley was home.
We share our home with our three cats and our tripod dog. I enjoy photography, horseback riding, hiking, and traveling. Someday I will have 52 cats and an orangutan sanctuary.
Yoko - team member since 2008
Hi, I’m Yoko, and I’ve been part of the WAH team since 2008. I grew up in Seattle and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Washington. Shortly after, I pursued my lifelong interest in working with animals and joined Green Lake Animal Hospital in North Seattle—a busy small-animal practice where I stayed for eight years.
Eventually, I was ready for a change of scenery, so I left the big-city life and moved to beautiful Whitefish. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! I have a sweet rez-rescue dog named Juniper, and we get outside for a couple of hours every day. We love hiking, paddleboarding, camping, swimming, cross-country skiing, playing in the snow, and going to scent work and training classes. I also have a soft spot for felines and enjoy working with them at the clinic.
Marje - team member since 2018
I have been in the veterinary field since 1996 and was the operations director for the Humane Society of Northwest Montana. I love riding my horses and spending time with my husband, dogs, and bird.
Donna - team member since 2018
I have been an animal lover for my entire life. I moved to Montana in 2017 after completing animal science tech school in central Wisconsin, where I was born and raised. I immediately fell in love with the mountains and knew right away that Whitefish Animal Hospital was a great fit for me.
When I’m not at WAH, you’ll find me out searching for the next adventure with my faithful companion, Walter.
Kelly - team member since 2018
I was born in Redwood City, CA, and moved to Whitefish with my family in 2000. After high school, I traveled to Peru to study abroad and explore the world. In 2010, I attended the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated in 2014 with a degree in Sociology and Criminology.
Shortly after graduating, I moved to Fort Collins, CO, for a year and realized Montana is where I’m meant to be. I came back to Montana in 2015 and was a nanny until becoming part of the WAH team in 2018. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time outside with my pups and exploring the beauty Montana has to offer.
Laura - team member since 2019
I was born and raised in Northern California and went to school for Animal Health and Animal Science. In 2018, my family and I relocated to Montana, where we spend our free time fishing, raising chickens and turkeys, gardening, and enjoying this beautiful place we call home.
Nikki - team member since 2019
I have been a Veterinary Technician since 2016 and have been with Whitefish Animal Hospital since 2019. Montana has been my home since I was 6 years old, and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I enjoy rafting, camping, and hiking with my husband, Tyler, and our crazy dogs, Lila and Cooper, during the summer, then escaping to Mexico for a little bit during the winter. I have always had a passion for animals, so this career and clinic were a perfect fit for me.
Ashley - team member since 2020
My name is Ashley! I am grateful to say that I was born and raised in the Flathead and have lived in Montana my whole life. I attended and graduated from Montana State University and spent several years working in Bozeman.
I began working as a veterinary technician at Whitefish Animal Hospital in 2020. I love being part of this team and serving the community we are fortunate to be a part of. Outside of work, I enjoy taking advantage of all the recreation Montana has to offer with my boyfriend and our dog, Siyeh. When we aren’t adventuring, we love cooking and spending downtime at home with our two cats, Rufus and Divot.
Margaret - team member since 1999
I moved to Montana in 1999 after graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Animal Science. I spent seven years working as a technician at Whitefish Animal Hospital before stepping into my current role as Practice Manager. When I’m not at the clinic, I love spending time outdoors with my husband, Marc, our daughter, Brooke, and our two English Cocker Spaniels, Goose and Scout. And when the weather (or my dogs) won’t cooperate, you can usually find me happily wandering the aisles of TJ Maxx—because you never know when you’ll find the perfect throw pillow you didn’t know you needed.
Jessie - team member since 2019
Born and raised in Montana, I moved on to the University of Montana immediately after my high school graduation in 2012. From my earliest memories, I’ve been passionate about animals and have always aspired to work with them.
I’ve been with WAH since 2019 and continue to love my time here. Outside of work, you can find me embarking on adventures with my pup, Nelly.

I am originally from West Michigan, where I also graduated from Michigan State University with degrees in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Anthropology in May 2025. I followed my parents here, and I am loving living here until I go to vet school. I have been working at WAH since the fall of 2025. I am learning so much and really enjoy working with our team. I have a passion for dogs, goats, horses, and cows, and I hope to be a mixed animal veterinarian. Outside of work, I love to keep learning, whether I’m brushing up on microbiology or skiing for the first time. My dog, Gus, also keeps my hands very full and takes me on many adventures.
Ashley Fisher - team member since 2021
